Sucrette

Ficus carica ‘Sucrette’

About

Sucrette — French for "little sugar" — is an aptly named French variety whose entire identity is built around exceptional sweetness. The figs are small, with brownish-violet to dark purple skin and amber-pink flesh that delivers a concentrated, pure sweetness with minimal complexity but extraordinary intensity. It is a delight to eat fresh and is particularly popular for making fig jam and confiture, where the naturally high sugar content reduces the need for added sweeteners.

Growing Notes

  • Compact growth habit — excellent for containers, balconies, and small gardens.
  • Prolific producer; the small fruit size means high yields by count even on young trees.
  • Full sun maximises the sweetness the variety is named for.
  • Suitable for fan-training or growing as a free-standing bush.
  • Cold hardiness moderate; protect below −6 °C (21 °F) or grow in a container.

My Notes

Grown in a large container on the terrace. The yield by number of figs is extraordinary — far more prolific than any other container fig I've grown. Made the first batch of fig jam this year almost entirely from Sucrette. The result was incredible.
