Violette de Bordeaux

Ficus carica ‘Violette de Bordeaux’

About

Violette de Bordeaux is one of France's most celebrated fig varieties, originating from the Bordeaux region and treasured across Europe for generations. The figs are small with deep violet to near-black skin and rich, dark raspberry-red flesh with an intensely sweet, complex flavour — dark fruit, a hint of berry, and a syrupy richness that makes it outstanding for both fresh eating and drying. Its compact, dwarf-like habit makes it perhaps the finest fig variety for container growing. Known for its trademark alternating 3 different leaf patterns.

Growing Notes

  • Naturally compact and dwarf — thrives in containers as small as 15–20 L without excessive pruning.
  • One of the best container fig varieties available; widely recommended for beginners.
  • Prolific producer of both breba and main crops.
  • Full sun brings out the deep colour and full flavour.
  • Cold hardiness good for a dark fig — tolerates down to around −10 °C (14 °F) with protection.

My Notes

One of the very best container figs I've grown. The combination of compact size, prolific cropping, and extraordinary flavour makes it almost perfect. The deep violet skin and rich berry interior are consistently beautiful every season.
