Sbayi

Ficus carica ‘Sbayi’

About

Sbayi is a Palestinian heritage variety, rooted in the agricultural traditions of the Levant where it has been cultivated for generations. The figs are medium-sized with golden-yellow to amber skin and pale, creamy flesh with an extraordinarily clean sweetness. The flavour is a beautiful mix of berry with warm hints of honey — lighter and brighter than most Mediterranean varieties, elegant rather than heavy.

One of the most distinctive qualities of Sbayi is its aroma. It is one of the few fig varieties that has a genuinely pleasant, noticeable smell — a fragrant berry-honey scent that sets it apart from the rest of the collection. Most figs have little to no aroma; Sbayi is a welcome exception.

Growing Notes

  • Golden skin deepens in full sun; partial shade produces greener, less sweet fruit.
  • Moderate vigour; well-suited to container growing in cooler climates.
  • Cold-tender — protect from frost; bring containers indoors before temperatures drop.

My Notes

A Palestinian heritage variety that truly stands out in the collection. The berry-honey flavour is elegant and unlike anything else here. The aroma alone makes it worth growing — few figs actually smell like something, and Sbayi does. Drying some fruit this year — even half-dried on the tree in a warm spell the flavour concentrates beautifully.
