Palestinian Dark
Ficus carica ‘Palestinian Dark’About
Palestinian Dark is a heritage variety with deep purple to near-black skin and rich, dark red flesh. It belongs to a family of dark Levantine figs that have been cultivated across Palestine and surrounding regions for centuries. The flavour is dense and sweet with a fruity earthiness characteristic of dark-fleshed Mediterranean varieties. It is typically eaten fresh but also dries well for long-term preservation.
Growing Notes
- Well adapted to hot, dry conditions with good drought tolerance.
- Full sun maximises both skin darkening and internal sweetness.
- Moderate to vigorous growth; prune to maintain an open canopy.
- The dark skin can mask ripeness — check by feel rather than colour.
- Cold-sensitive; protect in frost-prone areas or grow in a container.
My Notes
Grown as part of a focus on preserving Levantine heritage varieties. The earthy depth of flavour is distinct from European dark figs — heavier and more complex. Performs well in a sunny, sheltered spot.
