Palestinian Mwazi

Ficus carica ‘Palestinian Mwazi’

About

Palestinian Mwazi is a large-fruited heritage variety traditionally grown across Palestinian growing regions. The figs are notably large with greenish-yellow skin blushing amber at ripeness and pale, honey-sweet flesh with a soft, almost melting texture. "Mwazi" in local tradition refers to a variety prized for its generous size and sweet eating quality. It is a beloved variety in Palestinian culinary heritage, often consumed fresh or preserved in syrup.

Growing Notes

  • Large fruit requires consistent moisture as figs swell — irregular watering causes splitting.
  • Vigorous grower that benefits from open pruning to maximise air circulation.
  • Green skin at ripeness — harvest when figs feel soft and the neck begins to bend.
  • Best suited to warm, dry conditions; humidity near harvest can cause skin splitting.
  • Cold sensitivity moderate to high; protect in frost-prone areas.

My Notes

The largest fruit in the collection. When the season aligns, the figs are truly impressive in size and the honey sweetness is exceptional. A heritage variety I'm proud to be growing and preserving.
