Palestinian Hmadi
Ficus carica ‘Palestinian Hmadi’About
Palestinian Hmadi is a heritage variety from the Levant, part of a rich tradition of Palestinian fig cultivation stretching back millennia. The figs are medium-sized with pale greenish-yellow to amber skin and light, delicate flesh with a clean, honey-sweet flavour that is notably gentle and refined. It is typically consumed fresh at peak ripeness and is cherished for its cultural significance as much as its eating quality.
Growing Notes
- Adapted to hot, dry, low-humidity conditions — mirrors its native Levantine climate.
- Full sun essential; partially shaded fruit loses much of its characteristic sweetness.
- Water deeply but infrequently once established; drought tolerance is good.
- Moderate vigour; suitable for fan training or open-grown bush form.
- Cold sensitivity moderate to high — protect in frost-prone gardens.
My Notes
Part of an effort to preserve Palestinian heritage varieties. The gentle, refined flavour is unlike most others in the collection — less intense but extraordinarily clean and elegant. Deeply meaningful to grow.
