Strawberry Verte
Ficus carica ‘Strawberry Verte’About
Strawberry Verte is a French variety prized for its striking appearance: the exterior remains bright green (verte = green) at full ripeness while the interior is a vivid, deep strawberry red. The flavour matches the visual drama — bright, sweet, and fruity with genuine strawberry-like notes. It is closely related to Emerald Strawberry and shares the same dramatic colour contrast that makes both varieties popular with collectors and gardeners alike.
Growing Notes
- Stays green when ripe — judge harvest by softness and the downward droop of the neck.
- Full sun is critical for developing the vivid interior colour and bright flavour.
- Moderate vigour; suitable for container growing in colder climates.
- The bright flavour is best appreciated fresh, eaten within hours of harvest.
- Cold hardiness moderate; overwinter containers in a frost-free space.
My Notes
The green-outside, red-inside contrast makes this one of the most theatrical figs to serve. I often keep a few to cut open in front of guests — the reaction is always the same. Flavour is bright and refreshing, distinct from the heavier dark varieties.
Where to Find Strawberry Verte
Mislabeled figs are the collector’s oldest problem, and you usually don’t find out until the tree finally fruits years later. I list my own cuttings on Figstead — a marketplace I built and run, because I had been on the buying end of that problem too many times. That is also why the bar to sell there is where it is: 150+ verified sales at a 98%+ positive feedback rating before a seller is approved, and accountability for true-to-type accuracy resting on the seller personally. I sell under the same standard I set.
