Celeste

Ficus carica ‘Celeste’

About

Celeste — also known as "Sugar Fig" or "Honey Fig" — is one of the most beloved fig varieties in the American South, where it has been grown for generations. The figs are small to medium with amber-violet skin and pale pink flesh of exceptional sweetness. Its tightly closed ostiole is a key trait, making it highly resistant to souring and insect entry. The combination of cold hardiness, disease resistance, and outstanding flavour makes Celeste a collector's staple.

Growing Notes

  • Among the most cold-hardy of all fig varieties — tolerates down to −15 °C (5 °F) with root mulching.
  • Tightly closed ostiole provides excellent natural resistance to souring and fruit flies.
  • Compact, bushy growth habit; tolerates heavy pruning.
  • Primarily a main-crop variety; breba crop is light.
  • Adaptable to a wide range of soils; dislikes waterlogged conditions.

My Notes

A workhorse variety that I'd recommend to any beginner. No souring issues whatsoever, reliable cropping, and the sweetness is superb. The compact size suits the garden perfectly — it sits in a sunny corner and basically looks after itself.
