Brown Turkey
Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’About
Brown Turkey is one of the most popular and widely grown fig varieties, and for good reason. It produces two crops per year (a breba crop in early summer and a main crop in autumn), has striking copper-bronze skin, and delivers consistently sweet, amber-pink flesh. Hardy and adaptable, it tolerates cooler climates better than many other figs.
Growing Notes
- Prefers full sun (at least 6–8 hours) and well-drained soil.
- Water deeply but infrequently once established; overwatering encourages foliage over fruit.
- Container-friendly — can be kept compact with regular pruning.
- Hardy to around −10 °C (14 °F) with some protection; mulch roots in cold winters.
- Prune in late winter while dormant to encourage the following year's fruiting wood.
My Notes
Planted in spring. Currently in a 45 L pot on the south-facing patio. First breba figs appeared in the second year — six of them, all delicious. Planning to move it into the ground once I figure out the right spot.
