Calderona

Ficus carica ‘Calderona’

About

Calderona is a Spanish heritage variety, thought to originate from the Aragon region. The figs are medium-large with dark brownish-purple skin and firm flesh that turns deep amber-pink when fully ripe. It has a balanced sweetness with a slight caramel note. Calderona is known for cropping reliably even in years with irregular weather.

Growing Notes

  • Performs best in warm, sunny positions with good air circulation.
  • Moderate vigour — manageable in a large container or open ground.
  • Good resistance to cracking in wet weather near harvest.
  • Prune after the breba harvest to encourage strong main-crop wood.
  • Cold hardiness reasonable — mulch well below −6 °C (21 °F).

My Notes

Acquired through a Spanish fig enthusiast forum. A steady, unfussy performer that never fails to deliver a solid crop. The caramel notes in the flavour are distinctive — very different from the more common jammy varieties.
