Black Madeira

Ficus carica ‘Black Madeira’

About

Black Madeira originates from the Portuguese island of Madeira and is widely regarded among serious fig collectors as one of the finest figs in existence. The figs are small to medium, with very dark purple-black skin and deep wine-red flesh. The flavour is extraordinarily complex — rich berry, dark chocolate, and dried fruit notes layered over an intense sweetness. It demands patience and the right conditions, but rewards both generously.

Growing Notes

  • Requires a long, hot growing season — best suited to warm climates or a protected greenhouse.
  • Slow to establish; may take two or more seasons before fruiting reliably.
  • Full sun is non-negotiable for the complex flavours to fully develop.
  • Cold-tender — protect from any frost; ideal container candidate for overwintering indoors.
  • Water regularly but never waterlog; the root zone must stay aerated.

My Notes

The crown jewel of the collection. It spent its first winter in the garage and sulked a little, but the second summer it finally fruited — just four figs, but each one was a revelation. Growing it in a 30 L pot for portability.
