Yellow Long Neck fig tree

Yellow Long Neck

Ficus carica ‘Yellow Long Neck’

About

Yellow Long Neck is immediately recognisable by its distinctive elongated shape — the fig tapers to a long, slender neck that sets it apart visually from almost every other variety. The skin is bright lemon-yellow to golden at full ripeness, and the flesh is pale amber, very soft and juicy, with a clean, pure honey sweetness. It is a collector's variety valued as much for its unique appearance as for its genuine eating quality. One of the bigger fruit size varieties as the tree matures, it is not uncommon to produce 100+ grams sized figs. Requires a much longer period of time to reach peak ripeness, but the wait is well worth it.

Growing Notes

  • The elongated neck makes it more susceptible to neck splitting in wet weather — protect near harvest.
  • Full sun essential; the golden colour fully develops only in maximum light.
  • Moderate vigour; container-friendly with regular pruning.
  • Harvest when fully yellow and the neck begins to bend — the flesh should give easily.
  • Cold hardiness moderate; overwinter containers in a frost-free space.

My Notes

Added purely for the novelty at first, but it has earned its place on flavour alone. The long neck looks extraordinary hanging from the branch. It draws more comments from visitors than any other variety in the garden. The honey sweetness is exceptional.
