Ponte Tresa

Ficus carica ‘Ponte Tresa’

About

Ponte Tresa is an Italian variety originating from the Lombardy region on the Swiss-Italian border, where the village of Ponte Tresa sits at the foot of Lake Lugano. The figs are medium to large with brownish-green to amber skin and pale, sweet flesh with a mild, pleasantly honeyed flavour. Growing figs this far north in Italy has historically demanded varieties with some cold tolerance, and Ponte Tresa is notably hardier than many Italian types.

Growing Notes

  • Above-average cold hardiness for an Italian variety — bred for a northern climate.
  • Good choice for UK and northern European gardens where cold winters are a challenge.
  • Moderate vigour; suits fan-training or open-bush form.
  • Consistent producer — reliable even in cooler, cloudier summers.
  • Main crop is the primary harvest; flavour improves noticeably in warm years.

My Notes

Added specifically for its cold hardiness without sacrificing Italian quality. It has impressed in both respects — surviving a hard winter without protection and delivering good fruit quality the following summer. A reliable, characterful variety.
