Owensboro
Ficus carica ‘Owensboro’About
Owensboro is a Kentucky-origin variety selected and named by fig enthusiasts in the Owensboro region, known for its good cold hardiness relative to most fig varieties. The figs are medium to large with brownish-purple skin and amber to pale-red flesh that is soft and pleasantly sweet. It is valued primarily for its ability to produce reliably in climates that push the limits for fig cultivation.
Growing Notes
- Above-average cold hardiness for a fig — a good choice for borderline climates.
- Plant in the warmest, most sheltered microclimate available for best results.
- Mulch roots heavily before winter; the root system is hardier than the top growth.
- Even if top growth dies back, the roots will typically resprout in spring.
- Moderate vigour; manageable in containers or open ground.
My Notes
Added to the collection specifically to test cold hardiness alongside Chicago Hardy. Both have performed well in-ground. Owensboro's fruit quality is noticeably higher — richer flesh and better texture. A genuine hidden gem.
