Bari

Ficus carica ‘Bari’

About

Bari takes its name from the Puglia city on Italy's Adriatic coast, one of Italy's most celebrated fig-growing regions. The figs are medium-sized with dark brownish-purple skin and soft, amber flesh carrying a clean, rich sweetness with subtle floral notes. It is a traditional variety cultivated for generations, typically harvested for both fresh eating and for the famous dried fig production of the region.

Growing Notes

  • Thrives in well-drained, alkaline-leaning soil — reflects its limestone Puglia homeland.
  • Moderate vigour; well-suited to espalier or fan training against a sunny wall.
  • Consistent producer of a reliable main crop; breba crop variable.
  • Low water demand once established; excess moisture can dilute the delicate flavour.
  • Cold hardiness moderate — protect below −7 °C (19 °F).

My Notes

A heritage variety with genuine character. The floral top note in the flavour sets it apart from heavier, jammier types. I'm growing it fan-trained against the south wall where it is putting on good growth.
